Marginalia — a personal website

Notes from
a working life.

On making things, changing your mind, and leaving a little room for the next idea.

Hello, I’m Gareth.

I’ve been making this corner of the internet since 2002. It began on Geocities. Every version has been a chance to learn by building.1

These days I lead AI product work at Poe / Quora. Before that, my work took me through developer platforms, speech, and applied machine learning.

I like the distance between a fuzzy idea and something you can actually try. Code makes that distance shorter—and gives us something honest to talk about.

Some experiments become tools, like FlowTimer. Others become lessons. I try to keep those, too.2

Outside work: my wife and daughter, a round of golf when I can, and the familiar urge to find out how something works.

1 — A website, always in progress

The site started on Geocities in 2002. I’ve designed and built every version since. The full story lives on the About page.

2 — The experiment that did not work

Maskito taught me to listen to early feedback and improve the core filter experience, rather than keep adding supporting features.
